What are dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth that you can wear if you lose your natural teeth. While some dentures replace a few of your teeth, others restore all the teeth in your mouth. Dentures include false teeth that connect to a pink acrylic base that resembles your gums.

With dentures, you can chew and speak comfortably. They also help maintain your natural face shape to prevent sagging.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are multiple types of dentures, including:

Complete dentures

Also called full dentures, these restorations replace all the teeth in your mouth. Complete dentures cover the roof of your mouth and suction to your gums for a comfortable fit.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace some of your teeth. They typically connect to ceramic framework that wraps around your healthy teeth. While partial dentures connect to acrylic gums, they don’t cover the roof of your mouth.

Implant-supported dentures

Considered the gold standard of replacement teeth, implant-supported dentures connect to dental implants. These thin titanium posts surgically bond to your jawbone to hold your dentures in place. With enhanced stability, they can’t shift out of place.

After a full dental evaluation that may include digital X-rays and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, the team can recommend the appropriate dentures for you.

What is the process like for getting dentures?

Dentures take several weeks of planning to ensure the proper fit. The team at Select Dental & Orthodontics uses advanced technology, such as digital impressions, to keep your experience comfortable.

During your first visit, the team performs a comprehensive teeth cleaning and dental exam. They take digital X-rays to evaluate your teeth for your custom-made dentures. Then, they take cast molds of your upper and lower arches and measure your mouth for a precise fit.

These impressions and measurements help the team create a wax mold of your teeth. At your next visit, you try on the wax mold so the team can make any necessary adjustments. Your dentures are ready to wear at your final visit. The team provides detailed instructions on caring for your new replacement teeth.
